“But it didn't exactly feel like your friendly neighborhood watch group,” said Carmela. “Let me ask you something. Is your friend, Miss Norma, always home?”

“I don't know,” said Jekyl. “I guess so. She's the landlady. Isn't that what landladies do? Stay home and keep an eye on things?”

“But she doesn't own the building,” said Carmela.

“No, no,” said Jekyl. “It's been in the Caruthers family for years. Two elderly brothers who are both pushing ninety. Who knows what's going to happen to the place once they're gone. Some idiot developer will probably turn it into overpriced condos. Yech.”

“So Miss Norma works for the Caruthers family?”

“The Caruthers brothers,” giggled Ava.

Jekyl nodded. “She collects rent and sort of rides herd on the commercial cleaning people and the gardeners who maintain the flowers and pond in the courtyard. Why are you asking?”

“No reason,” said Carmela, wondering if Miss Norma knew about the secret passageway. “Just curious.”

“Sure,” said Jekyl. “Okay.” He raised a hand and gave an enthusiastic wave to a woman in a low-cut purple velvet dress. “Hey there, Miranda! You wanton woman!”

“And Miss Norma . . . she's not well off?” asked Carmela.

“Lord no,” said Jekyl, beginning to edge away. “In fact, she always seems to be on the fine edge of disaster.”
